One of the most common reasons is an increase in prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production. This can occur due to a benign tumor in the pituitary gland called a prolactinoma, or because of thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism. Certain medications, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, and drugs used to treat high blood pressure or nausea, can also lead to elevated prolactin levels. Additionally, frequent breast stimulation, such as through sexual activity, tight clothing, or manual squeezing, may trigger this discharge. In some cases, underlying medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), chronic kidney disease, or even stress and lack of sleep can disrupt hormonal balance and lead to unexpected milk production. It's also possible for some herbal supplements like fennel or fenugreek to contribute to this effect.
